Sweepstakes
Sweepstakes are company-sponsored advertising initiatives to promote goods, services, brands, shop signs or websites by offering prizes to participants, with or without obligation to purchase. They can last one year at most and be targeted at consumers as well as retailers or employees.
The prizes at stake are assigned to the winners by random chance or on the basis of participants’ abilities and according to the competition rules, in the presence of a Notary Public, or of the Chamber of Commerce’s Responsible for Public Trust (or his/her delegate), as provided for in art. 9 of Presidential Decree 430/2001.
The role of the Chamber of Commerce
Since April 2002, the Chamber of Commerce of Milan has been acting as a guarantor of Public Trust during:
- assignment of prizes to winners and identification of potential reserves;
- closure of sweepstakes’ procedures once the delivery of prizes to the entitled parties has been completed.
The Chamber Commerce has the territorial competence to intervene in the aforementioned phases when the promoter (or his/her delegate) has its headquarters in the Chamber’s territorial scope or if an assignment/ random draw event is held in that area.
