We use energy-intensive appliances every day. Consumption of electricity, water, and gas has a growing impact on the environment and the economy.

The European Union has included the reduction of energy consumption among the priorities of its energy and environmental policy.

Such a goal is pursued, among other things, through two kinds of provisions:

  • when designing their products, producers must comply with minimum standards, to guarantee a progressive improvement in energy efficiency;
  • suppliers and distributors are required to give consumers the information necessary to compare different levels of energy efficiency and make informed purchase decisions.

In regard to energy efficiency, the following framework directives constitute a reference point for manufacturers, suppliers and distributors:

 Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, establishing a framework of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products;

 Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 (repealing Directive 2010/30/UE) setting up a framework for energy labelling.
