CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of new cars
In recent decades, a broad scientific consensus has grown that the human factor plays an essential role in determining climate change. In particular, it has been found that the carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere by fuel combustion significantly contributes to climate change.
In 1997, in order to counter this negative trend, the most industrialized countries signed the Kyoto Protocol and committed to reducing total gas emissions by 5% less than the 1990 levels. The objective of the Protocol was to stabilize the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere through a drastic reduction of global emissions.
By enforcing the Kyoto Protocol, the European Union aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8%. To this end, the EU has equipped itself with a series of legislative instruments such as Directive 1999/94/EC, relating to the availability of consumer information on fuel economy and CO2 emissions to be provided when marketing new cars.
Italy has implemented the Directive via Presidential Decree 84/2003, which assigns a series of duties to manufacturers, dealers, Chambers of Commerce, and the Ministry for Economic Development.
The role of the Chamber of Commerce
The competent Chamber of Commerce oversees compliance with law provisions (Presidential Decree 84/2003) and periodically informs the Ministry for Economic Development about the implementation of the information scheme.
