General labelling requirements

In Italy, products offered for sale to consumers are required to display information concerning at least:

  • legal name of the product or product class;
  • name, business name, brand and registered office of the producer or importer established in the European Union;
  • where present, materials/substances that may cause harm to human beings, things or the environment;
  • materials and processing methods, when they can be decisive to define quality and product characteristics;
  • instructions, precautions and intended use, when they can influence the safety and correct use of products.

The aforementioned information must be written in Italian and displayed either on the label, on the product, on the packaging, or on the information sheet.

 

Sanctions

Failure to comply with the aforementioned labelling obligations will result in a sanction ranging from € 516 to € 25,823. The sanction will be calculated according to the products’ price and number of items for sale.

 

Supervisory authority

Supervisory activities on labelling are carried out by Administrative Police, without prejudice to the investigative powers of Judicial Police bodies.
